CDE Lecture 3- Dr. Zakir Hussain Presents on Advanced Mandibular Denture Stability
Sulaimani, Kurdistan Region – The Department of Dentistry at Komar University of Science and Technology (KUST) successfully hosted the second session of the Continuing Dental Enrichment Programme on October 26, 2025. Held in the E-Auditorium at 12:30 PM, the seminar featured Dr. Dr. Zakir Hussain, who delivered a compelling lecture focusing on a critical concept for prosthetic success: “Suction Effective Mandibular Complete Dentures – BTC Point”.
The Crucial Role of the BTC Point
Dr. Hussain’s presentation centered on the Buccal Shelf-Tongue Contact (BTC) Point, highlighting its role as a crucial landmark for the biomechanical stability and functional harmony of mandibular complete dentures. This point is located where the polished surface of the denture meets the tongue during functional movements.
The BTC point is essential because it helps establish neutral zone balance by ensuring equilibrium between the inward pressure of the tongue and the outward forces exerted by the buccinator muscle. When this point is properly established, it significantly enhances retention, stability, and patient comfort, which is particularly important in cases of resorbed ridges where muscular coordination is vital for function. Dr. Hussain emphasized that understanding the BTC point is key to guiding the contouring of the lingual flange and achieving optimal denture border extension, thereby ensuring effective muscle control and reducing denture dislodgement during use.
